In loving memory of Carol Ann Riekse (nee Schrovenwever), born on 10/23/40 in Holland, MI, and departed on 7/17/23 in Holland, MI, we celebrate the extraordinary life of a devoted Christian, a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and a compassionate friend. Carol had a wry sense of humor and the gift for gab.
Carol’s journey began in the heart of the Dutch Christian Reformed tradition, shaping her faith and values from an early age. She attended Holland Christian High School and Calvin College, where she cultivated her intellect and nurtured her spirit. It was during these formative years that she met the love of her life, Tom, with whom she shared 60 years of happiness.
As a mother, Carol poured her heart and soul into raising her two children, Tom (Diana) Riekse, and Barbara (Mark) Schau, instilling in them the values of love, compassion, and perseverance. She embraced her role as a sister to Mary Workman (Jim) and her twin Barbara Reiswig (Dick); niece and nephews, Susan, John, Bill, and Rusty. She took immense pride in her role as a grandmother to Jack, Charlie, and Everett whose lives were enriched by her wisdom, love, and playfulness.
Deeply involved in her community, Carol dedicated her time and energy to make a difference. She shared her passion for art with school children, leaving a lasting impression on young minds through her presentations. She was an active member of Deerfield Presbyterian in the Chicago suburbs, where she found solace, strength, and a sense of belonging through volunteerism, and as the President of Presbyterian woman.
Carol’s love for literature and her insatiable curiosity led her to a fulfilling career as a librarian. Her contribution to the Lincolnshire library board, where she held an elected position, exemplified her commitment to fostering a love of reading within her community.
Later in life, Carol embarked on a new adventure, co-founding a successful financial services company alongside her husband, Tom and son Tom Jr. Together, they faced challenges head-on, showcasing their entrepreneurial spirit and building a legacy of success. In their retirement years, Carol and Tom embraced her wanderlust, traveling throughout Europe.
Carol Ann Riekse leaves behind a rich tapestry of love, laughter, and cherished memories. She will forever be remembered for her unwavering faith, her nurturing spirit, her infectious laughter, and her zest for life. She touched the lives of all who knew her, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts.
