(Park Twp., MI - WHTC News) - A two-vehicle crash claimed the lives of a couple in their 60’s that were apparently visiting the Lakeshore from suburban Chicago.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Steve Austin, Steven and Jerle Jaco were in a northbound car on 168th Avenue that was approaching Quincy Street in Park Township late yesterday afternoon. After stopping for the stop sign, the car proceeded into the intersection, where it was broadsided by an eastbound pickup truck that apparently had the right of way, as Quincy Street had no stop signs at that corner.
Steven Jaco, the 63-year-old Woodridge, Illinois man who was driving the car, died at the scene, while his 62-year-old wife Jerle was taken to Holland Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. The pickup driver, 27-year-old Ross Kramer of Holland, was treated for bumps and bruises at the scene. He told police that he couldn’t avoid a collision.
Austin added that all involved were buckled up, and that speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash, as the incident remains under investigation.
