(Pullman, MI - WHTC News) - The coming of Daylight Savings Time this weekend is a good time to think about fire safety.

Experts say that the twice-a-year moving of the clocks can be used to check batteries on household smoke alarms. That tip is a background to tomorrow’s Fire Safety Awareness Day at Pullman Elementary School on South Avenue in Lee Township. From 8 to 11 AM, local firefighters, along with other groups and agencies, will be displaying and demonstrating fire equipment, along with passing on information on improving fire safety in homes and businesses. State Representative Bob Genetski of Saugatuck is also expected to attend, helping volunteers pass out at least 450 smoke detectors while supplies last.

The earlier start and later end to Daylight Savings Time begun three years ago, as Congressman Fred Upton of St. Joseph co-sponsored such legislation that he said would help save energy. However, it is reported that lobbyists for sporting goods and convenience stores were actually the major force in persuading federal lawmakers to pass the bill.
