(Saugatuck Twp., MI - WHTC News) - The ongoing story involving developer Aubrey McClendon and Saugatuck Township continues.
Last night, the township board passed a resolution establishing a new policy when it comes to dealing with litigation. From now on, any out-of-court settlement must be agreed to by the board in advance before it can be signed.
This was in response to a deal reached between township Supervisor Bill Wester and Singapore Dunes LLC, the holding company owned by McClendon, which settled a tax issue over pristine dune land at the mouth of the Kalamazoo River. McClendon will receive 350 thousand dollars in overpaid taxes over a three-year period, with some of the money coming from Saugatuck schools.
However, McClendon still has a zoning dispute against the township, and has funded a court effort to overturn last May’s election results, in which a millage increase to fund the township’s war chest for its legal battles with McClendon passed by just two votes. A hearing on that effort is today.
