(Port Sheldon Twp., MI - WHTC News) - A 28-year-old Holland man who had suffered critical injuries in a single-vehicle crash last month has succumbed to his injuries.

Officials at Spectrum-Butterworth Hospital said on Thursday that Kelly Ritsema had died, 18 days after the wreck on Lakeshore Drive in Port Sheldon Township.

According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Steve Kempker, Ritsema was driving his pickup truck northbound at an apparent high rate of speed when, shortly after crossing Stanton Street, his vehicle went off the right side of the road and struck two large trees. He was pinned in his truck for 40 to 45 minutes. After rescue crews extricated him, Ritsema was flown to the Grand Rapids hospital for treatment.

Kempker added that Ritsema wasn’t buckled up at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation.
