TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WIBQ) - It's an alarming sight: empty shelves at the area food bank empty or close to it. WTHI TV reports that it recently checked with the Catholic Charities food bank and found just that scenario. The continuing sluggishness of the economy and continually growing unemployment problem is putting a strain on agencies that help the needy across the nation.

Food bank officials say locally the need has grown by 15% in just the past year. According to a Census Bureau report, Indiana ranks number 25 out of all the states for poverty.
