WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) – A local Democrat will challenge Senator Pam Galloway in a recall election this year.

Jeff Johnson of Wausau launched his campaign today, criticizing Galloway for failing to help create jobs. “People in our area want, need and deserve someone focused on the economy. That’s what I’ll do,” Johnson said in a statement.

Galloway is one of four Republican lawmakers targeted for recall, in part for her vote last year in favor of collective bargaining limits on most public union employees. Organizers must turn in their petitions Tuesday to the state Government Accountability Board.

A message left at Galloway's office in Madison was not returned Thursday afternoon.

Johnson said collective bargaining was part of the reason he chose to run.

“But the issue is so much larger – it's about a total breakdown of our legislative process in Madison,” he said.

Johnson retired last year as a probation agent. He has been the chair of the Marathon County Democratic party but is taking a leave of absence to run for the Legislature.

Johnson was born in Superior in 1959. He is married with two children.
