MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - A new poll shows that about two-thirds of Wisconsin voters are okay with showing photo ID's in order to vote.
The Marquette Law School surveyed 701 registered voters earlier this month -- and 66 percent support the voter ID law approved by the Republican governor and Legislature last year.
The GOP had tried for a decade to pass the new law, saying it's needed to fight voter fraud. But Democrats say there's relatively little vote fraud in the Badger State -- and the real purpose of the law is to discourage voting by minorities and other groups that most often vote Democratic.
Chapters of the League of Women Voters, ACLU, and NAACP have filed state and federal lawsuits to try and throw out the ID law.
It will be used for the first time in next month's local primaries throughout Wisconsin.
