William Porter, age 87, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, April 26, 2021, in his home.
William “Bill” served his country in the Army in Germany during the Korean conflict as an ambulance driver. William was kind, compassionate, witty, and very loyal. The love of his life, Joyce, will miss him dearly. His children and grandchildren had tremendous respect for his knowledge, and he was good to them. The entire family was blessed to have him in their lives. He was an inventor and entrepreneur who owned and operated Automatic Inspections Systems. In his free time, he built and flew model airplanes and won many contests doing so. Amongst friends, it was said, “If you can’t count on Bill, you can’t count on anyone.”
He was preceded in death by his son, Scott Porter; and parents, Clyde and Bernice Porter.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Porter; son, Keith and Cindy Porter of Augusta, GA; daughter, Vicki Jewel of Lake City, MI; son, Bryan Porter of Jenison, MI; son, Ken and Jennifer Porter of Denver, CO; stepdaughter, Cindy and Michael Hood of Walker, MI; stepson, Ted and Lisa Bertrand of Hopkins, MN; stepson, Randall and Robin Bertrand of Hinesburg, VT; 7 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren; and sister, Sally Joyce of Grand Rapids, MI.
Visitation is Friday, May 7, from 5:00-7:00 pm at Langeland Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E. 16th St. Holland, MI 49423.
Funeral services are 11:00 am Saturday, May 8, 2021, at Zion Lutheran Church, 77 West 32nd St. Holland, MI 49423. Because of COVID restrictions, guests are encouraged to contact the church directly at 616.392.7151 to arrange funeral attendance.
Burial to take place in Pilgrim Home Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family would encourage memorial contributions to be given in Bill’s honor to Zion Lutheran Church or to a charity of one’s choice.
