GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Coast Guard City USA is honoring the men and women who help protect the nation’s shoreline.
The annual Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival began its 10-day run last Friday (July 30, 2021) after being forced to cancel last year’s event due to COVID 19 health protocols. For Pure Michigan Vice President Dave Lorenz, who lives in the area, the festival means a great deal to the community.
“This is a celebration of those who serve us every day in the US Coast Guard,” he said on “WHTC Morning News” during his weekly appearance this past Friday. “Grand Haven has that really close connection for many years, primarily because of the loss of the Escanaba in World War II, but it kind of goes on and on.”
The festival, which began in 1924 as a picnic and rowing competition, becoming a full-blown event 13 years later, normally attracts over 350,000 people from across the country.
