Ottawa County to recycle residents’ tires with grant. For the month of August, Ottawa County residents can rid themselves of discarded tires at little cost to them and help the environment at the same time.
GRCC Lakeshore Campus plans community open house. Residents will be able to get a first look at the Grand Rapids Community College’s new Lakeshore Campus during an upcoming open house. The Aug. 21 event will highlight the transformation of the facility, and staff will offer assistance to anyone ready to sign up for classes.
Pandemic spurs renewed interest in home canning. As the pandemic strained supply chains last year, many West Michigan families turned to home canning as a way to stretch their food dollars, store supplies for winter months, and be sure of what they are eating. Novices and experienced canners alike recommend home food preservation as a satisfying endeavor.

U.S. Coast Guard Festival, through Aug. 8, 2021, throughout the Grand Haven area. Join the fun in Grand Haven, Coast Guard City USA, and celebrate the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard. While the festival first began in 1924, it was officially recognized in 1971. LST Movies on Deck, 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, at the USS LST 393 Veterans Museum, 560 Mart St. in Muskegon. Watch the animated classic movie “Toy Story” on the deck of a restored World War 2 LST (Landing Ship Tank) in Muskegon Harbor. The LST 393 , launched in Virginia in 1942 as an ocean-going ship, went on to be used for shore-to-shore delivery of tanks, amphibious assault vehicles, and troops during the war. The LST 393 is open for tours from Tuesday through Sunday until Labor Day. So even if you can’t make the movie, come for a tour of this fascinating piece of history.
