ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The weather cooperated, so a new tradition in Zeeland returned on Friday (Aug. 6, 2021).
The second Chalk Festival was held on the Woonerf, located off of Elm Street between Cherry and Main streets downtown. Residents and visitors saw the artists of various ages and skill levels at work, using chalk as their medium and the street as their canvas, creating works that were 6’ x 6’ large. In addition, there was a food truck, outdoor games and live music for those attending.
One of those who did NOT draw on the street, but was seen admiring the work, was Zeeland Mayor Kevin Klynstra.
“You wouldn’t want to see my chalk drawings, for it would be more primitive, like stick figures,” he joked on “WHTC Talk of the Town” during his monthly appearance on Tuesday. “You see how talented these people are that do these drawings, and it’s a fun thing to come down and see.”
There were some concerns about whether or not the weather would have canceled the event after morning thunderstorms moved through the area, but those fears dissipated as the Chalk Fest was held under sunny skies and warm temperatures.
Patrons were encourage to cast their votes for their favorite creations, with a Saturday morning winner announcement expected here.
