Andrew Raymond McManus, age 83, of Holland, Mich passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, August 15th surrounded by his family.
He is survived by his loving wife Ellen and children, Andrew, Anne, Helene (Jay Qualman), and grandchildren Jack, Katherine, and Will.
Ray was born August 1, 1938, in Philadelphia, Penn to Andrew and Helen (Weidner) McManus. He was preceded in death by his son Kenneth in 1971.
Ray met Ellen in Blue Anchor, New Jersey where they married on February 4, 1967, and shared 54 wonderful years of marriage.
Most important to Ray were his family, faith, and serving the Veterans through his work at the VA Hospital.
Ray and Ellen moved to Milwaukee, Wis. where Ray attended graduate school in Social Work at Marquette University. He began his almost 40-year career helping Veterans at the VA Hospital in Sheridan, Wyoming before settling in Iron Mountain-Kingsford, Michigan.
Ray loved the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and enjoyed cross country and downhill skiing, camping, canoeing, and biking. He traveled with his family across the Upper Peninsula and especially loved camping on Lake Superior. He instilled a love of the outdoors and caring for the environment in his family.
Ray also loved all types of music, from Country to Classical, and introduced his children to all types of musical artists including favorites Simon and Garfunkel, John Denver, and Bach. Ray was also an avid reader and loved to collect books made easier by ordering from Amazon and frequenting the local bookstore in Holland.
Ray’s kind and funny personality made him a friend of anyone he met.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 20, 2021, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 171 W. 13th ST. Holland. Burial will be in Pilgrim Home Cemetery.
