HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 19, 2022) – Kids’ Food Basket (KFB) has announced the development of a 10-acre sustainable, chemical-free farmland located in Ottawa County. The farm is a shared property in partnership with Ridge Point Community Church in Holland. KFB plans to use the land to increase food provision and expand its Grow commitment.
Kid’s Food Basket hosted a groundbreaking ceremony and press conference Tuesday to announce the partnership with Ridge Point Community Church and the new farmland. Produce grown on the newly acquired farmland will go directly back into the community, helping increase access to healthy food for the residents of Ottawa and Allegan counties. The local produce will be donated to local community partner sites and go directly into Sack Suppers for the 1,000 students Kids’ Food Basket currently serves.
The Kids’ Food Basket Farm – Ottawa+Allegan is scheduled to reach full, growing capacity by 2023. For the upcoming 2022 harvest season, KFB will be implementing a small-scale growing model that will feature crops such as green beans, sugar snaps peas and watermelons. The farmland will also be the location of a learning barn and a year-round greenhouse to extend growing season and education opportunities. Construction on the barn and greenhouse will begin in summer 2022.
Volunteer opportunities will also be made available at the new farm location in the upcoming months. For more information on the status of the farm and how to volunteer, please visit kidsfoodbasket.org.
