GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC AM/FM) – Even though it’s banned in the park, officials are blaming alcohol in part for several fights that broke out Monday at the Grand Haven State Park, causing the park to be closed during the afternoon of the Fourth of July.
Andrew Lundborg with the Michigan Department of natural resources told WOOD-TV 8 that several hundred people were crowded on the beach when the fights broke out Monday. He said conservation officers witnessed at least two fights.
Police arrested one person on an assault charge. They say to their knowledge, no one was seriously hurt.
Police in Grand Haven tightened security in 2017 after a beach brawl involving upwards of 300 people broke out the day before Independence Day.
The park’s beach and the South Pier were both shut down Monday afternoon, but reopened Tuesday.
