HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 7, 2022) – One of this area’s long time legal minds has passed away.
Hannes Meyers Jr. died on Sunday at the age of 89. A former Holland District Court Judge for 10 years (1992-2002) and a member of the state Transportation Commission for 14 years (1978-1992), Mr. Meyers had practiced law for over three decades along the Lakeshore. During that time, he served as the attorney for a number of municipalities, including Zeeland, Hudsonville and Allegan. The state Department of Transportation inducted Mr. Meyers into its Hall of Honor in 1994, naming the rest area on eastbound I-196 in Zeeland Township in his honor.
Among his affiliations were the Ottawa County Bar Association, the Michigan Bar Association, the Michigan District Judges Association, the National Judicial College, and the Macatawa Area Coordinating Council. His non-profit work included the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area, the P. Buckley Moss foundation, the Zeeland Rotary Club, and the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee.
In retirement, Mr. Meyers served as a visiting judge in the Ottawa-Kent-Muskegon county region through 2016, and he was a frequent contributor to the Holland Sentinel through his published “letters to the editor.”
A funeral service is set for 11 AM on Monday, September 12th at Harderwyk Ministries on Lakewood Boulevard, with visitation the day before from 2-4 PM at the Dykstra Northwood Chapel on Douglas Avenue. Memorial contributions may be made to Harderwyk Ministries or Hospice of Holland.
