HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 14, 2022) – Addressing the past and looking ahead to the future are on the agenda before the Holland City Council tonight.
No final word will be handed down during the 6 PM Study Session, but the Tulip City’s governing panel is slated to review the final proposed process for the historic city greenhouses off of State Street, across from Evergreen Commons. There was an open house and a day-long workshop back in February to go over ideas for the buildings, some of which have been on the site for 110 years.
A couple of years ago, the city built a new greenhouse off of East 24th Street, and since that time, officials have been going over what to do with the old greenhouse site and the historic buildings there. In March, the Holland Historic Commission gave its OK to move the 27 foot by 27 foot tropical house to the southeast corner of Centennial Park, near West 12th Street and Central Avenue, while the property itself was transferred to Evergreen Commons in 2015 as part of a deal to expand the city’s snowmelt system south of Central Avenue to the senior activity building’s site.
Also during this evening’s Study Session, council members will go over with city staffers a visioning plan for the South Shore Village District, looking at potential public and private enhancements for the business area off of West 17th Street. The plan’s process took place from this past May through July, but the germ of the concepts goes back to 2005. It is hoped that the plan would spur additional private investment planning on the behalf of private property owners, while providing a framework for further work by the city and the district’s Business Improvement District Board.
The City Council Study Session will be held in the second-floor Training Room at Holland City Hall (270 S. River Ave.), with an online link to the agenda and supporting documents here.
