LAKETOWN TWP, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 28, 2022) – Christopher Nyland was the first to bring home a deer this season from the Laketown Township Archery Deer Hunting Program at Huyser Farm Park, 4188 64th St. Nyland, a Laketown resident, got the eight-point buck at 7:16 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 3, in the middle-western section of the 102-acre park, 4188 64 th St.
Nyland also got a buck last year during the Huyser hunt. Fifteen people were chosen to hunt from Oct. 1 through Nov. 14 then Dec. 1-31. Graafschap Hardware, 4578 60 th St., handled registration. The parks commission first added bow hunting at the park in 2008.
In the summer, Nyland and his wife, Julia, and their two dogs spend a lot of time in the park, “which has helped me become pretty familiar with the property.”
Nyland used a compound bow with mechanical broadhead. “I heard some noises off to my right so I stood up and clipped into my bow. Shortly after I saw a mature doe with two fawns off to my right about 35 yards. At this point I was pretty relaxed and just watching. I won’t take a doe when it is with young ones,” he said. He waited about 10 minutes then heard a deer approach.
“I wasn’t sure if I was spotted at this point. He started walking about 10 to 15seconds later and I was able to count the points and check the body size. Once I
knew it was a shooter I pulled back, he walked about 8 to 10 yards and quarteredaway from, and that’s when I knew I could make a clean, successful shot.”
The park property will remain open for hiking, fishing and other recreational activities during the hunting times. Signs will be in place at the parking area
notifying people that hunting is underway.
