ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 17, 2023) – There are plenty of items on the agenda for Monday night’s Zeeland City Council meeting.
Members will formally set up a public hearing ahead of a vote on a Fiscal 2024 budget for May 1st. According to city staffers, the spending plan will call for a tax levy of over 11.1 mills for operations and nearly a tenth of a mill for West Michigan Regional Airport.
Two amendments to the city charter are before the governing panel. One would allow up to four chickens to be raised on residential property, with no roosters, and owners would have to have an enclosed building with a fenced in yard behind the house. The other would allow up to two hives of bees, with a maximum size of 20 cubic feet, and a flyaway barrier, also behind the house. Mayor Kevin Klynstra, who is also on Zeeland’s planning commission, spoke about this matter during an appearance earlier this month on “WHTC Talk of the Town.”
City Manager Tim Klunder will also appraise council members on upcoming road construction work at the junction of Main Avenue and Fairview Road over the next month and a half that will lead to road and lane closures, as well as word that the owners of the Community Restaurant that burned down last year have pulled all of their permit requests for rebuilding at the long-time Main Avenue site.
The Zeeland City Council conducts a work-study session at 6 PM ahead of the 7 PM start of the business meeting in Chambers at Zeeland City Hall (21 S. Elm St.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
