ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, June 5, 2023) – Despite one community’s failed effort to install solar panels at its township hall, the future of energy in Allegan County could lie in the sky.
On Monday evening at 6 PM, a solar field presentation is slated for the county’s human services building (3255 122nd Ave.), as MSU Extension Service Educator Ryan Coffey Hoag will discuss how agricultural land could be used to develop solar fields while retaining its value for commercial farming.
County Board Chairman Jim Storey of Holland heard Hoag’s presentation to the Michigan Association of Counties in April and invited him to the Dumont Lake complex.
In April, the Laketown Township board agreed to halt any further discussion into a proposal for installing 48 solar panels at the Township Hall, at a cost of over $53,000, despite tax rebates, due largely to objections by nearby residents over recovering the cost of the project, along with aesthetic concerns and perceived property value loss.
