ANN ARBOR, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, June 22, 2023) – Holland is up for a statewide honor, and it has nothing to do with tulips or being “in bloom.”
The Michigan Municipal League announced on Thursday that the Tulip City’s Community Impact Day 2023: Turning Ripples of Influence into Tidal Waves of Impact is one of nine projects nominated for the MML’s Community Excellence Award. The “most prestigious” honor that the organization dedicated to supporting municipalities can bestow highlights local success stories and best practices, and shares innovative community programs or projects on a statewide platform.
The Michigan West Coast Chamber is behind Holland’s Community Impact Day. The second annual event was held on May 17th, as over 900 volunteers committed three hours of time to help 60 nonprofit organizations, with 16 organizations allowing their employees to take time off for the effort.
Chamber President Jodi Owczarski talked about it during an appearance earlier this year on “WHTC Talk of the Town.”
A small MML voting board will determine four finalists, to be announced on July 18th, with the winning community receiving a large trophy at the MML annual convention in Traverse City on October 18th through the 20th. Cassopolis captured the 2022 Community Excellence Award, and two other Ottawa County municipalities – Grand Haven in 2010 and Hudsonville in 2017 – have captured this honor since it was inaugurated in 2007.
