HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 7, 2023) – Two major issues before the Holland City Council during Wednesday night’s biweekly business meeting had public hearings held before the governing panel had cast decisive votes.
One was a revised Master Plan that included an updated Future Land Use map to coordinate with changes in the Unified Development Ordinance; a Washington Square vision plan; a Historic Preservation chapter; a Neighborhood Improvement Committee blueprint and more. Senior City Planner Steve Peterson explained.
That Master Plan was approved by council unanimously.
The other issue was a proposed 12-year Industrial Facilities Tax Abatement for LG Energy Solution Michigan in order to leverage state funding for a nearly $16.6 million-dollar, 53-thousand square-foot expansion to its battery pack packaging facility off of East 48th Street, in addition to building a structure with an IFT in place. The expansion, which would be completed in about 18 months, would help the lithium-ion battery maker retain 155 full-time staffers.
While the abatement was approved by council unanimously, there was concern about the future of the historic Old Wing Mission building on 147th Avenue, on property the company acquired in October for possible complex expansion. Holland Mayor Nathan Bocks brought that question up directly to LG Energy Solution Director of External Affairs & Government Relations Lisa Niscoromni.
