GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 29, 2024) – A 35-year-old Robinson Township man is in the Ottawa County Jail on charges stemming from a domestic dispute last week that turned violent.
On Wednesday, Vaughn Lowe Smith was arraigned in Grand Haven District Court on two counts of assault with intent to murder, three counts of felony firearms, and one count of firearm possession by a prohibited person. Judge Craig Bunce set bond at $5,000.
Last Thursday morning, Smith and a 34-year-old Robinson Township woman were wounded after he fired off a handgun at a residence in the vicinity of 96th Avenue near Winans Street. The woman was struck by two of the bullets, while Smith suffered a knife wound to the neck when attacked by a 16-year-old boy trying to defend his mother. The teen, along with four other children in the residence, were not injured, while the woman was treated for wounds to the leg and head and released.
Smith, after recovering from his wound at an undisclosed hospital, was taken to the county jail five days after the incident, where he appeared for his arraignment via a video feed with the county courthouse.
No other names in this incident have been disclosed as the case remains open, and anyone with any information on the matter is asked to contact the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department or Ottawa County Silent Observer (877-887-4536).
