Hope College women’s basketball coach Brian Morehouse will help coach the USA Women’s Under 17 National Team later this month during the team’s trials in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
This is Morehouse’s first USA Basketball assignment.
The USA U17 team is holding trials over Memorial Day weekend for the 2024 FIBA U17 Women’s World Cup this July in Irapuato and Leon, Mexico.
Morehouse will serve as a court coach during trials along with Krystle Johnson of Hoover High School in Alabama.
They will assist USA U17 head coach and New York University head coach Meg Barber as well as the USA’s assistant coaches, Bobbi Morgan of Ursinus College (Pa.) and Trenia Tillis-Hoard of Tyler Junior College (Texas).
Morehouse guided Hope College to a 26-4 record and MIAA regular-season championship this season. The Flying Dutch advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
During his career, Morehouse has led Hope to two national championships: 2022 and 2006. This season, he became the fastest coach in NCAA history, any gender or any level, to reach 700 victories (795 games).
The USA is seeking its sixth gold medal at FIBA Women’s World Cup, having won the title in all but one iteration of the event (2016, bronze). The Americans hold a 40-1 all-time record in the competition.
The 2024 FIBA U17 Women’s World Cup features 16 teams. The U.S., which will be in Group C, will take on Australia in its opening game on July 13, followed by Puerto Rico on July 14 and Croatia on July 16. The USA will face Puerto Rico and Croatia for the first time at the U17 World Cup. Every team will advance to the single-elimination tournament after group play.
