HUDSONVILLE, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 19, 2024) – The third of four local fairs along the Lakeshore this season begins on Monday.
The Hudsonville Community Fair kicks off its six-day run with afternoon 4-H dog and lamb shows before the Flying Star Rodeo takes over the Grandstand for a 7 PM performance. A tradition dating back to 1933, the self-described “Biggest Little Fair in Michigan” has been at its current location off of Park Avenue since 1963.
County Fairs have picked up some of the slack since the nation’s first state fair, the Michigan State Fair, ended its 170-year-long legacy as a state budget casualty in 2009. Although a private entity picked up the pieces four years later in suburban Detroit, it doesn’t have the size or the scope of the original fair.
Efforts to reestablish a true state fair in Lansing have not gone far, according to commercial farmer and state Senate Minority Whip Roger Victory of Hudsonville.
The Berlin Fair in Marne began the local fair season in June, followed by the Ottawa County Fair on Holland’s North Side last month. The final fair is the Allegan County Fair in Allegan from September 6th through the 14th.
