The second-ranked Hope College volleyball team completed the third unbeaten MIAA campaign in four seasons with a 3-0 victory at Trine University on Friday.
The Flying Dutch did it perfectly, too.
Hope won every set against a league opponent this season after defeating the Thunder 26-24, 25-15, 25-21, and finishing the league schedule at 8-0.
The Flying Dutch are the first league team in five years to accomplish the feat.
Head coach Becky Schmidt was proud of her team’s accomplishment.
“Volleyball is a funny game. We had a great season last year, but when you look at point-by-point, we only won 55 percent of the points we played. It is really narrow,” Schmidt said. “To be able to execute consistently and win points when they count, I’m proud of this group.”
As MIAA regular-season champion, Hope will be the top seed for next week’s MIAA Tournament and host the semifinals and finals on Friday-Saturday, Nov. 15-16, at DeVos Fieldhouse. The field will be announced after regular-season play concludes on Saturday, Nov. 9.
Senior Addie VanderWeide (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian HS) topped the Flying Dutch with 15 kills at a .438 clip.
Senior Alison DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian) chipped in nine kills on a match-high .444 hitting percentage and a team-best five blocks.
Hope hit .292 as a team.
