GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 11, 2025) – A 54-year-old Grand Haven man is apparently free on bond following an arraignment on charges stemming from a six hour-long standoff at a residence in the Ottawa County Seat on Monday.
The county website on Wednesday morning doesn’t list Matthew Pring as being held after Tuesday’s hearing in 58th District Court on two counts of felonious assault, with Judge Craig Bunce setting a five thousand-dollar bond, and scheduling a preliminary hearing for next Thursday morning, February 20th.
The incident began around 10:20 AM on a report of an assault, with someone armed with a gun, at a home in the area of Franklin Avenue near Beacon Boulevard (US-31). After initial attempts to speak with the suspect, a perimeter was established, and neighbors were told to stay inside and away from the two-block area cordoned off.
An “extensive negotiation period” of nearly six hours commenced, with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department Critical Response Team deployed. Public Safety officials say “less lethal force” was used around 4:30 PM to subdue Pring, but didn’t say what method was deployed, and a weapon was uncovered inside of the residence.
According to Grand Rapids television station WZZM, the accused, a US Army veteran on disability, purportedly waved a weapon at fiber optic installers working outside of his home. An additional charge of assaulting a police officer was reportedly filed against Pring.
Authorities say that there was no threat to neighbors, nearby schools and businesses, with no injuries reported. The incident remains under investigation.
