Two Hope College sprinters will race at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships this week in Rochester, New York.
Juniors Sara Schermerhorn and Liam Danitz qualified by recording Top 20 times in their respective events.
Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West HS) is seeded first in the 400 meters and shares the ninth seed in the 200 meters.
Danitz (West Branch, Michigan / Ogemaw Heights) is seeded fourth in the 200 meters.
The NCAA Division III Championships are on Friday-Saturday, March 14-15, at Nazareth University’s Golisano Training Center.
Schermerhorn will race first on Friday: the 400-meter women’s prelims at 3:25 p.m. and the 200 prelims at 4:30 p.m.
Danitz’s 200-meter prelims are scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m.
Saturday’s finals start at 4:40 p.m. for the women’s 400, 5:15 p.m. for the men’s 200 and 5:30 p.m. for the women’s 200.
This is Schermerhorn’s third trip to indoor nationals. The exercise science major became the Flying Dutch’s first Indoor All-American in the 400 meters in 2024 with a seventh-place finish. Schermerhorn also finished 11th in the 200 meters as a sophomore and 19th in the 200 as a freshman.
In the 400, Schermerhorn topped the nation with a school-record run of 55.31 seconds. McKenzie Reser of Augustana College (Illinois) is seeded second at 55.94.
In the 200, Schermerhorn is tied for ninth with a school-record time of 24.82 seconds. The University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse’s Lauren Jarrett is seeded first at 24.26.
Danitz is making his first appearance at indoor nationals.
The exercise science major is seeded fourth in the 200 with a school-record run of 21.59 seconds. The University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse’s Sam Blaskowski is seeded first at 21.34.
Last fall, Danitz competed in the NCAA Division III football playoffs as a defensive end, helping the Flying Dutchmen win the first postseason game in team history and reach the third round for the first time.
