ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 16, 2025) โ Changing the look could be considered a theme for Monday eveningโs activities involving the Zeeland City Council.
During the Work Study Session before the biweekly Business Meeting, the governing panel will be updated on the proposed renaming of Heritage Square as Hoogland Plaza, in honor of the long-time Mayor Les Hoogland who died last year. City Marketing Director Abby deRoo is recommending an estimated $19,000-plus expenditure for landscaping that had been overlooked during the reconstruction of Main Avenue, money that she believes fits within the renovation project and wouldnโt require a budget amendment. While this issue wonโt be immediately voted on, deRoo is estimating that, upon approval by Council, a timetable for a dedication ceremony should be determined by late spring.
What should be voted on during this business meeting are proposals for renovating Zeelandโs municipal website. Yellow Lime Creative would work with city officials on the overhaul of the website itself at a cost of nearly $69,000, while LibraryMarket would work with library staffers on establishing a separate website at a cost of over $28,000. In addition, Yellow Lime would also be retained for ongoing web maintenance at an annual allowance of $7,200. The current website, established nine years ago, hasnโt been updated since 2019.
In addition, Council will be asked to endorse a resolution supporting Ottawa Countyโs application for a Realizing Opportunity with Broadband Infrastructure Network grant, which would go towards paying for installing 250 miles of fiber, which would increase broadband access throughout the county. City Manager Tim Klunder, in his memo on the matter to the governing panel, admitted that the project, โmay not directly benefit properties within the City of Zeeland (we are not considered as underserved), the proposed expansion would bring broadband to neighboring areas, which could lead to further connectivity in the city and additional competitive options.โ
The Zeeland City Councilโs Work Study Session begins at 5:45 PM, 75 minutes before the Business Meeting. Both will be held in Chambers at Zeeland City Hall (21 S. Elm St.). A link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
