LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 8, 2025) – Now that the stairs leading down to the Lake Michigan shoreline at Laketown Beach Park are gone, how will visitors get to the beach there now?
The Laketown Township board approved dismantling the stairs on March 26th, with work begun on April 17th, and any remaining debris from the 32-year-old steps should be gone by Friday. While it is still possible to get to and from the beach through marked paths through a “bowl,” a steep drop with a flat bottom, the township’s parks and recreation commission on Tuesday considered two location options for replacing the stairs with 220 feet of five-foot-wide new wooden stairs with railings, ranging in total costs from between $248,000 and $291,000, and lasting between 20 and 30 years.
More consideration on the matter by the township board is expected during its May 21st meeting.
