WASHINGTON (WHTC-AM/FM, May 26, 2025) – It may be temporary, but the JH Campbell power plant in Port Sheldon Township will not close this coming Saturday.
In an emergency order issued last Friday, US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright directed the Midcontinent Independent System Operator and Consumers Energy to keep open the 1,560-megawatt, coal-fired facility for at least 90 days. The Jackson-based utility, looking to meet state power portfolio guidelines of being free of fossil fuel-based energy, had slated to close the plant about 15 years ahead of its scheduled design life.
A Consumers Energy statement said that the utility plans to comply with the order, and is reviewing the matter as to its overall impact on the company.
