HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 6, 2025) – A project that has been a decade in the making could soon become a reality in Holland.
During Wednesday night’s biweekly business meeting, City Council members will be asked to approve separate contracts for tearing down the historic greenhouse off of Central Avenue near West 20th Street, and moving the 27 foot by 27 foot Tropical House to a site at Centennial Park. The Tropical House would be dismantled piece-by-piece and labeled for future reassembly without windows, according to Sixth Ward Councilman Devin Shea.
City officials are recommending a $98,470 contract with Renovation Services to handle the Tropical House, and a $25,500 agreement with Pitsch Company to take care of the rest of the property, with a $12,500 contingency for potential asbestos removal.
Discussion on clearing the site date back to 2015, when council approved a deal with Heart of Holland that provided snowmelt expansion to Evergreen Commons, along with a transfer of the land to the Commons. The project has been held up by efforts to remove the site as part of the Holland Historic District.
If these proposed contracts are approved, the tear down should begin promptly and take up to six weeks to complete. The reconstruction phase is planned for next spring, probably after the Tulip Time Festival in early May.
The Holland City Council’s 6 PM business meeting is in Chambers at Holland City Hall (270 S. River Ave.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
