ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 13, 2025) – The national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement campaign begins on Wednesday.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s annual effort takes place more than two weeks ahead of Labor Day weekend, one of the deadliest holidays for crashes involving alcohol-impaired driving, with 511 fatalities two years ago as a result of drunk-driving crashes during Labor Day weekend.
The agency will have an extensive ad campaign, along with providing funds for extra patrols of state and local police, as well as county sheriff’s deputies, with this money funneled to agencies in Michigan through the state Office of Highway Safety Planning, which begins its effort on Friday. One of the participating local law enforcement entities in this initiative is the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office, headed by Sheriff Frank Baker.
NHTSA data shows that more than 12-thousand people are killed nationwide each year because of drunk drivers, or one person every 42-minutes.
