LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 16, 2025) – While a moratorium on short-term rentals remains in place for a Lakeshore community, public input sessions about a long-term direction on this matter have been scheduled.
Following a joint meeting on Wednesday, the board of trustees and planning commission in Laketown Township established at least two, and perhaps three, such meetings over the next three months for feedback on this issue. Two-hour sessions are slated for Wednesday, September 3rd and Wednesday, October 1st, with a third such gathering on Wednesday, November 5th, if necessary.
The township board in May enacted a six-month ban on free-standing, short-term rentals, while members decide on its future. Proponents of STR say that it brings revenue to property owners and helps stimulate the local economy, while opponents counter with noise and damage issues by tenants, absentee owners, and the diminishing of available housing stock.
No final decision on the matter will be made during these public hearings, with the board expected to make such a determination by its regularly-scheduled November business meeting.
