DOUGLAS, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 18, 2025) – What to do with an old village hall that has some historic value?
That’s a question before council members in the City of the Village of Douglas during Monday night’s 6 PM biweekly business meeting. On the agenda is a proposed restrictive covenant agreement that would be attached to the sale of the Village Hall (86 W. Center St.) when the city moves all of its municipal government operations into a new building off of Wiley Road and the Blue Star Highway this fall. Such an agreement would allow the sale of the property, with the proviso that the building would maintain its exterior character, and that any intentions of demolishing the structure would need council approval.
This move of government operations has been in the works since 2019, according to Mayor Cathy North, but was an initial casualty of the COVID 19 outbreak.
The old city hall had been Dutcher’s Lodge, built by Freemasons in 1875 and named for founding son Thomas Dutcher. Council agreed to put the land up for sale this past April.
