GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 28, 2025) – A 20-year-old Jenison man was sentenced on Monday in the shooting death of a 19-year-old Grand Valley State University student at a Standale area home last spring.
Westen Meulenberg was ordered by 20th Circuit Court Judge Jon Hulsing to serve between 70 months and 25 years in prison after pleading guilty a month ago to a felony count discharging a firearm in a building causing death. Meulenberg had been held in custody since a May 9th incident at a home off of 2nd Avenue, in which he allegedly fired several rounds through the floor of an upstairs bedroom during a party. One of the shots struck Connor Lotterman in the head, causing a mortal wound.
The Ottawa County Medical Examiner’s Office had determined that the death was accidental, and sheriff’s detectives believe alcohol was a factor. Meulenberg could have been given a life prison sentence.
