ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 18, 2025) – It didn’t equal the passion of 19 years ago, but the issue of alcohol sales in Zeeland was addressed again on Monday night.
The City Council approved an ordinance amendment that would allow establishments with valid liquor licenses to sell alcohol by the glass from 12 Noon on Sundays to 2 AM on Mondays. It was a matter that has been bandied about since Zeeland residents voted in 2006 to end the city’s prohibition on liquor sales, by a margin of 40 votes.
Mayor Kevin Klynstra and his fellow council members asking staff early this year to gauge sentiment by retailers on the matter.
The lone no vote came from Mayor Pro Tem Sally Gruppen. However, alcohol sales by the bottle is still banned in Zeeland on Sundays for the time being. Sunday liquor sales by the glass will take effect on December 18th.
In addition, Council approved adjusting the city’s Social District rules to include Elm Street Park and the Vande Luyster Square, but not the Splash Pad site off of Main and Elm.
It was the last meeting presided by Klynstra, who is retiring after 16 years as Mayor and three decades overall on council. Rick Van Dorp will assume the mayor’s role at the next meeting on December 1st. The governing panel also said goodbye to Jim Broersma, who is also retiring, and Glenn Kass, who lost in a bid for reelection. New council members Amy Langeland, Rebecca Perkins and Andrew Bult will assume their seats in two weeks.
