HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 9, 2026) – For the third time in less than 24 hours, there was a traffic-related fatality reported in the Holland area.
Around 1:10 AM on Thursday, Holland Department of Public Safety officers and firefighters were dispatched to the junction of US-31 and East 24th Street. That was where a 62-year-old Holland man, attempting to cross the divided highway against a red light, was struck by a northbound vehicle approaching the intersection on a green light. The pedestrian was taken to Holland Hospital, where he died from his injuries, while the motorist, a 28-year-old Saugatuck man, was not hurt.
No names were disclosed, and alcohol is being considered as a contributing factor in the incident, which remains under investigation.
On Wednesday morning, a 21-year-old man and a 32-year-old man, both from Grand Rapids, lost their lives in separate single-vehicle crashes about three and a half hours apart. One occurred near Port Sheldon Street and 152nd Avenue, the other on I-196 near the 96th Avenue overpass. In both instances, the drivers were apparently unbuckled as they were thrown from their vehicles.
