LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 27, 2023) – A Lakeshore community’s parks system has been busy during the month of May.
Laketown Township officials announced on Friday that rip current warning signs and a rescue ring have been restored at the township beach on the end of 142nd Avenue. The signs are in both English and Spanish, while a life ring clearly marked as township property attached to the side of a sign facing Lake Michigan, ready for deployment in an emergency.
The township’s Parks and Recreation Commission approved the purchase of the signs and ring last summer, not only as a precaution, but to maintain a record of no reported drowning incidents at Laketown Beach for several years. The signs and ring were initially installed in late summer, and had been taken down shortly after Labor Day for winter storage. The beach does not deploy warning flags as other locales along Lake Michigan do.
Ten days ago, the commission unanimously elected Jeremy Van Hoven as its new chairman, replacing Tom Shuff, who had moved out of the township. Van Hoven is on his third year on the panel, and began serving a full two-year term after winning election last November. Shuff’s seat on the five-member board is currently vacant, and the board will be briefed about the eight applicants for that post at its next meeting on June 21st.
