GENEVA TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 4, 2024) – The eventful life of a Van Buren County Sheriff’s canine had another chapter written about him over the weekend.
According to Sheriff’s Sergeant Richard Rennhack, a three-year-old boy had apparently pried open a window at his home just east of South Haven and fled on foot. He was last seen about a half hour before he had been reported as missing, wearing only a diaper.
County Sheriff Daniel Abbott himself was first on the scene and deployed numerous resources at his disposal to search for the toddler, including calling in K-9 Kuno and his handler, Deputy Calhoun, who were both off-duty at the time. Kuno was able to track the child about a quarter mile from the residence towards a large body of water before rescuers spotted the boy. He was around 50 yards from the water’s edge, and other than some minor scratches, appeared to be in good health and returned to his grateful family.
This was the fifth missing child that Kuno and his handler have been able to locate and rescue. Over the past four-plus years, the canine tracked down a Gobles man after a 200-yard foot chase; helped apprehend a 24-year-old Lawrence man who had assaulted an ex-girlfriend and her mother; another Gobles man wanted on a probation violation; and a South Haven area man who had several outstanding arrest warrants.
Kuno also survived three stab wounds from a man who was holed up at a Gobles residence, a suspect that eventually was shot to death in a confrontation with deputies.
