UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM, May 7, 2024) – One recall vote, along with several school and township ballot proposals, are before voters in some precincts along the Lakeshore on Tuesday.
Most of the attention on this First Tuesday in May annual election will be focused on Ottawa County’s second district, where Republican incumbent Lucy Ebel will try to complete her first term on the county board, challenged by Democrat Chris Kleinjans. Ebel was the target of a recall effort for her support of Ottawa Impact-related measures, and fellow commissioner Jacob Bonnema of Zeeland feels that this could be a litmus test for the August 6th Primary Election and the November 5th General Election.
Renewal of 18-mill non-homestead levies are before voters in the Grand Haven, Hamilton, Hudsonville, Wayland, West Ottawa and Zeeland school districts; Hudsonville schools are asking for approval of a two-mill operational tax over four years; Plainwell schools seek the OK for a $42.4 million bond proposal; Holland Township wants just over a half mill during a four-year span for non-motorized paths; and Casco Township seeks renewal of its one-mill ambulance service and .65-mill police protection levies over five years, along with a quarter of a mill, one-year request for senior services.
With no early voting other than through casting absentee, in-person balloting runs from 7 AM through 8 PM.
