ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 5, 2024) – Another Lakeshore municipality tackles the issue of short-term rentals on Monday night.
On the agenda for the biweekly Zeeland City Council meeting is a proposed amendment that would allow such purposes for property owners in the city’s Central Business District, as well as the Washington Avenue Mixed-Use District, through a special land use approval from the Planning Commission. Such lodging arrangements would not exceed 29 days, with an eight-person maximum occupancy limit, two persons per bedroom, and the property owners would need to register annually with the city. Penalties would be established for violations, including suspension or revocation.
Currently, the City of Zeeland prohibits all short-term rentals, but a request by a property owner last year to lease out a residence for visiting missionary use led officials to reconsider the matter. This amendment would maintain such a prohibition for residential neighborhoods.
This is one of a number of issues before the Zeeland City Council on Monday evening, with a 6:30 work-study session ahead of the 7 PM business meeting, both in chambers at Zeeland City Hall (21 S. Elm St.). A link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
