SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 27, 2024) – One of the Lakeshore’s tourism destinations has taken a stand on short-term rentals.
On Monday evening, the Saugatuck City Council, on a 4-2 vote with one abstention, approved ordinance amendments that imposes a 20 percent cap on the number of short-term rentals in the R1 Residential District, establish the effect of such limits on existing licenses, establish how available licenses will be issued, and establish police power in this matter. The cap will begin with new license applications, and doesn’t apply to properties outside of the specific district.
The issue has caused some division, not only in the community, but on the council itself. Some say that it would help maintain neighborhood character and decorum, while others contend that it would stifle tourism and hamper efforts to sell residential property in the area.
Saugatuck is the latest Lakeshore community to address the short-term rental issue. Earlier this month, the Zeeland City Council approved STR’s in the central business district and a mixed-use district, but maintained a ban in residential zones. Meanwhile, a lawsuit has held up a ban on short-term rentals in Park Township, with the matter slated to go to court in November.
