ALLEGAN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 12, 2024) – It’s two down and two to go in the move of county services out of downtown Allegan.
On Tuesday, the new Allegan County Treasurer’s office opens at the County Services Building off of Dumont Lake (3282 122nd Ave.), joining that of the Register of Deeds office that made the shift from the courthouse building off of Chestnut Street in downtown Allegan.
In March of 2023, County Clerk/Register of Deeds Bob Genetski, Treasurer Sally Brooks, and Drain Commissioner Denise Medemar filed suit against the county board over moving their offices, claiming that state law mandates their work be done in the county seat of Allegan. The Board countered that, when the county was established in 1835, the city of Allegan had not yet existed, so the county seat was in Allegan Township, and that designation has never been formally changed.
A settlement of the litigation came last month, and the County Clerk and Drain Commissioner offices are still to be moved. No date for those shifts has been disclosed thus far.
The county board made the changes in order to accommodate the expansion of the 48th Circuit Court by one judgeship, remodeling the County Services Building after the county’s mental health agency OnPoint moved to the site of a former retail store in Allegan.
