LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 4, 2025) – While most people were enjoying the Arts Festival at Centennial Park on Saturday, or the final weekend of the Coast Guard Festival in Grand Haven, a couple of community members spent their Sunday morning cleaning up Saugatuck Dunes State Park.
It wasn’t because it had been trashed by callous visitors. Instead, a state Department of Natural Resources steward worked with the volunteers as they went through an area next to the road that leads into that Laketown Township location, targeting spotted knapweed, an invasive plant that could threaten the dune land that leads into Lake Michigan.
The task may be daunting, as a first sweep was held in March. Another effort is planned for 10 AM on Sunday, August 21st. An email to register is: LidgardT@Michigan.gov.
