ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 18, 2025) – What should a municipal entity do with extra money coming from Lansing?
Some might say that the cash should go back to the taxpayers, but since there is no mechanism at this point to do that, the Zeeland City Council is expected to “direct these resources towards projects that will enhance the stability and long-term success” of two initiatives during Monday evening’s biweekly business meeting.
Those words from Assistant City Manager Kevin Plockmeyer comes from discussion two weeks ago by council members that more than $1.7 million in personal property tax reimbursement from the state should be allocated in two ways. The bulk of the money – nearly $1.1 million – will be put into the city’s Municipal Street Fund for the Church Street project to help pay down about $3 million needed for the rebuild. The other $680,000 will help pay for installing boilers for the snowmelt project at 17 East Main.
In the 6 PM work-study session ahead of the 7 PM business meeting, council members will again discuss allowing Sunday liquor sales by the glass and by the bottle, with such a proposed ordinance amendment planned for drafting next month, along with whether to still consider a study into possibly building a recreation center.
Both the work-study session and the business meeting of the Zeeland City Council will be held in Chambers at Zeeland City Hall (21 S. Elm St.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
