HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 3, 2025) – Concerns earlier this year that tariffs could affect Christmas gift spending apparently haven’t come to fruition…yet.
The National Retail Federation estimated a record number of shoppers, nearly 190 million, did some Christmas shopping over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, which included Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Some retail observers believe that Americans could go over the one trillion-dollar mark in spending through the entire holiday season.
During the height of the tariff conflicts, there was sentiment that increased costs of many gift items, especially toys, that are made abroad would lead to decreased sales over the holidays. This could impact charities that collect such items for gifting to the poor, such as Toys for Tots.
Mike Martin is with the Shoreline Detachment of the Marine Corps League, which helps conduct this annual collection along the Lakeshore.
The Marine Corps League is expected to begin picking up Toys for Tots boxes at various sites on December 18th.
Martin, who is also a past commander with the Holland VFW Post 2144, added that the post’s annual Christmas Party for families in the community is on December 20th at the Post (175 W. 8th St.), with the deadline for registration coming up this Thursday (Dec. 4) at 616-392-2144.
