ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 31, 2025) – There will be extra police patrols on Michigan roads this New Year’s Eve.
A federal grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, funneled through the state’s Office of Highway Safety Planning, are funding additional state police troopers, along with county sheriff’s deputies and local police officers, as they take a “zero tolerance” approach to impaired driving as 2026 approaches. It’s an effort to cut down on motoring fatalities over the holiday season, in which 19 persons were killed over a five-year period through 2024, with nine of those involved in collisions involving impaired driving.
Campaigns such as “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” have had an impact, according to Allegan County Sheriff Frank Baker.
The current enforcement initiative, which began on December 12th, runs through Thursday evening.
