HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 27, 2026) – The cold, snowy, strong grip of winter continues to envelop the Lakeshore.
The National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids has a Winter Weather Advisory in place for Allegan and Ottawa counties through 7 PM on Tuesday evening, as between two to four inches of snow is expected, with winds gusting as high as 35 miles per hour causing blowing and drifting.
Not only are these conditions hazardous for driving, but it could be deadly for those seeking shelter. Holland’s Gateway Mission opened its new men’s center off of Waverly Road earlier this month, and it comes just in time, according to the Mission’s Jason Parks.
For the sixth time in nine days, most school districts along the Lakeshore have canceled classes on this Tuesday due to inclement weather.
According to Michigan Department of Education guidelines, K-12 districts can only call six “snow days” during an academic year before they would have to either add on days to the end of the school year, or lengthen the current days on the calendar, in order to meet the 180-day requirement for full per-pupil state funding, or to confer high school diplomas recognized by the department.
Some educational leaders admit that getting an extension of three extra days from Lansing has become more difficult, so they may be turning to the legislature, such as Republican Representative Brad Slagh of Zeeland Township, for help.
Harsh, wintry conditions are expected to continue through the rest of the week, with wind chills falling to 20 below across much of the area by the weekend.
