LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 23, 2026) – Getting to the lake shore from a local park will continue to be a challenge for the time being.
However, the Laketown Township board is seeking some financial help from Lansing to help pay for new stairs, as well as dune restoration, at Laketown Township Beach. This past Friday, trustees approved retaining Prein and Newhof, at a cost of $9,200, to help in submitting a request for a state Department of Natural Resources Passport Grant at the site off of 142nd Avenue.
Last May, the township parks department took down wooden stairs that had decayed since being installed more than three decades ago, becoming a safety hazard. A recommended installation of adjustable aluminum beach stairs, at a cost of nearly $200,000, was rejected by the board, with the mandate to seek grants to fund not only the stairs replacement, but other improvements.
The application deadline for this state grant is April 1st, with a December decision expected. DNR Passport Grants are for up to $150,000, with a 25-percent local match, which township officials say is included in the Fiscal 2027 budget.
